Musculoskeletal pain is one of the most common reasons people come to see me at my Bath clinics. Whether it’s chronic joint pain, muscle tension, stiffness or inflammation, these conditions can have a significant impact on daily life – affecting your sleep, your work and your ability to do the things you enjoy.
Acupuncture offers a natural, holistic approach to musculoskeletal pain that looks beyond the site of the pain itself to address the underlying patterns that may be contributing to it.
What is musculoskeletal pain?
Musculoskeletal pain refers to pain affecting the muscles, bones, joints, tendons and ligaments. It can range from acute injuries to chronic long-term conditions, and includes:
- Arthritis and joint pain
- Neck and shoulder pain
- Lower back pain
- Fibromyalgia
- Repetitive strain injuries
- Hip and knee pain
- Sciatica
- General muscle tension and stiffness
How can acupuncture help?
From a traditional Chinese medicine perspective, musculoskeletal pain is often associated with the stagnation of qi and blood in the affected area – meaning that energy and circulation are blocked, causing pain, stiffness and reduced movement. Acupuncture works to restore the smooth flow of qi and blood, reduce inflammation and encourage the body’s own healing response.
From a Western perspective, research suggests that acupuncture stimulates the nervous system, promotes the release of natural pain-relieving endorphins, and increases local blood flow to injured or inflamed tissues.
NICE guidelines recognise acupuncture as an effective treatment option for chronic primary pain, and many patients find it provides relief where other treatments have not.
What does treatment involve?
I always begin with a detailed consultation to understand not just your pain, but the wider picture – your lifestyle, stress levels, sleep patterns and overall health. This allows me to develop a treatment plan that is truly tailored to you as an individual.
Alongside acupuncture, I may use cupping therapy to release deep muscle tension, or moxibustion to warm and nourish areas affected by cold or chronic stiffness. I’ll also offer practical guidance on simple changes that can support your recovery between sessions.
How many sessions will I need?
This varies depending on the nature and duration of your condition. Acute pain often responds more quickly, while chronic long-term conditions may require a longer course of treatment. I usually suggest starting with four to six weekly sessions and reviewing progress from there.
